Once upon a time kitchens were often hidden from sight. A place only to prepare meals and wash dishes. Now, and in recent years, kitchens have become an extension of our living spaces. Kitchens are a major gathering spot. Kitchens are a room to be adorned and showcased! Who doesn’t want a chic, swoon-worthy kitchen!
Think Terrazzo, concealed vent hoods, and statement stoves, just to name a few.
Most of these trends are carrying over from 2017, but are gathering steam and really taking off in 2018.Ā Whether you implement just one or several, let these upcoming trends serve as design ideas for your 2018 kitchen renovation or new home construction.
Herringbone Floors: Herringbone floors add an instant air of European refinement to any space and the kitchen is no exception.

No Upper Cabinets:Ā Still trending in 2018 is the lack of upper cabinets. Removing upper cabinets really opens up the kitchen visually and makes the kitchen appear much bigger and brighter. And, it allows you to utilize the countertop space more effectively. Turn your open spaces into a more artistic area by adding floating wood shelves or even a piece of art work.

Pantry Walls:Ā If you go with less upper cabinets and you still need more storage then a “pantry wall” may be the way to go. While, the walk-in pantry most likely will always be a top choice in kitchens, the pantry wall is starting to show up more and more in kitchen design. When you are short on walk-in pantry space and/or upper cabinets this is a welcome and stylish addition.

Statement Stoves:Ā If you are ready to throw down the big bucks then statement stoves are for you! In fun colors, high-end purveyors such as La Cornue and Lacanche are more than willing to help you adorn the kitchen like no other way.

Vintage Rugs:Ā With all the hard surfaces and gleaming appliances the kitchen can feel a tab cold. Warm up and soften your kitchen with a hand-crafted Persian rug. The soft texture underfoot will be a welcome addition.

Two-Tone Cabinetry:Ā While not a new trend as dark lowers paired with light uppers has been a trend for a little while, what is new is the combo of different materials. We’re seeing light colored cabinets paired with natural woods such as walnut, creating dimension and texture. ThinkĀ ‘bare wood’ kitchen cabinetryāpale or cerused wood, finished naturally, not lacquered.

Sinks Same Material as Countertop:Ā Visually blending your sink with the countertop is hot in 2018! Whether constructed out of a marble, stone, or concrete countertop, these sinks will create a luxe and seamless look.

Flat-Front Cabinetry:Ā For years, Shaker cabinets were all the rage, but increasingly flat front cabinets are popping up in kitchens everywhere.

Hidden Vent Hoods: In the past the vent hood was out there for all the world to see. Now it seems that cleverly hiding your hood is in vogue. Think tiles, natural wood, copper sheeting, or even steel!

Marble To The Max: Marble is definitely not a new trend, but to be on trend think outside the box and create a piece of art on the wall with floor to ceiling or counter to ceiling marble! White and light gray marbles will do the trick, but if you want to really make a statement and your wallet doesn’t mind š think black and white! And here’s another concealed vent hood!

Terrazzo:Ā Well hello there 1960’s! It seems that Terrazzo (a classic Italian surface) is making a comeback in all areas of the home including the kitchen. You will find terrazzo on kitchen floors, countertops, and backsplashes. I think it’s pretty cool actually! And there are so many color options you can really make your space unique! I had to include more than one picture š Terrazzo is only just coming up again as a cool flooring material, so if see yourself as a trend-setter, terrazzo may be for you!
