7 Great Girlfriend Dates That Aren’t Brunch!

You and your girlfriends have done brunch together, painting parties, spa days, and hitting the farmer’s market together to buy local wares, to name a few. Your girlfriends are a great source of fun, sanity, and relaxation! Are you at a loss for new ideas of ways to spend time together?

When it comes to bonding with our besties, these are all great ideas! And, who doesn’t love brunch with friends? But sometimes we need a break away from the usual. Sure, we’ll always appreciate a mimosa (or three) with our gal pals, but there’s something to be said for out of the ordinary activities that make us say, “Remember the time that we…?”

Here are 7 ideas for your next gal pals date:

Spend part of a day riding bikes through a park. Here in Houston we have the fabulous Buffalo Bayou Park. Stretching from Shepherd Drive to Sabine Street between Allen Parkway and Memorial Drive, the 160-acre Buffalo Bayou Park is one of the country’s great urban green spaces. You can take your own bikes or rent bikes there at the park’s Bike Barn location. There is plenty to see and do to keep you busy for at least a few hours. And if you’re feeling hungry you can stop by The Dunlavy for a bite and a relaxing view. Might as well have a mimosa while you’re there 🙂 My cousin and I did this in July so it was pretty hot, but it was still lots of fun! Cooler temps are on the way though!

Mind Your Soul. Last month a group of us joined our sweet friend Felicia (aka Fish) to celebrate her birthday by breaking a sweat in a morning class at our local Soul Cycle. Fish, in the purple headband, shares Madonna’s  birthday so our class was full of pulsating Material Girl tunes! Express Yourself!! While there wasn’t much “expressing ourselves” to one another during class while we were gasping for air 😆 I think this is a great girlfriends date and a great way to start the day! After class you can catch up at a nearby cafe or restaurant and comiserate on how you wanted to stop pedaling and punch the instructor when he screamed “faster and add some tension on the bike”!

Take a cooking class. Homemade summer or fall risotto, anyone? Ok, you may have already done this one, but I still feel it deserves a mention. Sur La Table has some great cooking classes and you get to drink wine (that you bring) and eat what you prepared at the end. It’s a win-win! It’s been a year since I last joined some girlfriends for a fun night of cooking at Sur La Table and I’m itching to go again! Anyone?

Learn some chords and start a rock band. Ok, Ive secretly wanted to be in a rock band since a very young age. Specifically I’d love to be rocking it out as a singer or playing the guitar like Slash 🙂 Here locally (also nationwide), we have Bach to Rock. They do host 2 hour adult parties where they “teach you to play an instrument” and then you have your performance. You provide your own beverages 😉 I’m not sure that much could be learned in an hour to sound anything like Prince and The Revolution, but it still sounds like a fun time with lots of laughs! So get some rocker chick clothes and tease that hair (err…not) and have some rockin’ fun!

Go to a comedy show. We could always use more laughter in our lives and a comedy show is a great place to get your laugh on! After all, LAUGHTER IS THE BEST MEDICINE! Laughter is contagious. Laughter reduces stress. Laughter boosts immunity. So check your local comedy club’s schedule and round up your friends for some belly laughs!

Take a wine tasting class together. This is one that should be easy to get participation! Do you know your Merlots from your Malbecs? Your Pinot Grigios from your Chardonnays? How fun would it be to take a wine tasting class in your own hometown? No traveling required! This is one you may want to Uber for though 🙂 Here in Houston we have The Texas Wine School in the River Oaks/Kirby area. There are classes for French wines, Italian wines, wine and food pairings, and more! Saluti!

A pool party. Got a pool in your backyard? Invite your gal pals over to Sip and Float while it’s still warm outside! Thanks Jessica F for that great party title! It’s a great way to cool off in the summer heat and have a few hours of fun! Put out a few nibbles, make a signature drink or grab a few bottles of wine, your flamingo float, and get some Vitamin D with your gal pals! No kids allowed!
