Harvey May Have Destroyed A Lot of Things in Houston But Not Our Humanity!

Harvey, you suck! You brought unimaginable devastation into our lives! You were scary. You were unpredictable. You were relentless. You wreaked havoc for 4+ long days in Houston and our surrounding areas. You destroyed homes, lives, and infrastructure. People were left stranded on rooftops, in their attics, clinging to anything they could waiting for rescue. No food. No water. No end in sight. You took so much from us!

But with all that you brought you also brought out the best in people! You brought out the humanity in people! People in our communities and even people from far and wide have come together to help the thousands in need of rescue. Things that that might normally come between us have been forgotten. Race. Religion. Gender. Political party. Sexual orientation. Socioeconomic status. None of this matters! What matters is human life! Helping your neighbors. Helping complete strangers.

Thank you to all the first responders whose “job it is to help” by putting your own lives on the line to help others. And thank you to our “neighbors” who went out (and are still out) to help even when their own lives had been turned upside down. I know that our first responders could have not tackled this GINORMOUS task alone. The “regular folks” have made a HUGE impact, to say the least!

Harvey, you brought humanity into the spotlight! Thank you! Thank you for bringing out the best in us. Thank you for reminding us that we truly care about each other no matter our differences. Thank you for reminding us that we can depend on others in times of need. We care about our communities! We care about our fellow man!

Let us not forget this. We need not wait for another disaster to show our humanity. It is the way we really should live everyday of our lives. Let us continue to help and lift up one another in the coming days, weeks, months, and years.

The rain has ended and the sun has come out in Houston, but there is still a long road of recovery ahead. There is still devastation and flooding all around us. I am hopeful though that the “humanity” of our people will continue to shine.

Stay strong! We will recover from this!

There are countless images of the Internet of people helping people. These are but a few…

Hi! You are so sweet to check on me! I live close to Downtown Houston and the Galleria, but our area fared well! It was rough for a while over the weekend, but we did not flood here in our neighborhood. We feel very blessed! Much of our city and surrounding towns were hurt severely. Thank you again for reaching out! Xoxo Angela

In fact, I was in your area that week. My husband had to go on a business trip. We were supposed to come back to LA on Saturday morning, but the company advised us to leave on Thursday morning. I’m glad you are doing ok. Hope things get back to normal soon.
